A fascinating adventure that covers many beautiful and remote areas.
Itinerary: Day 1 São Luís; Day 2-3-4 Lençóis Maranhenses National Park; Day 5-6 Rio Preguiças / Paulino Neves / Parnaiba; Day 7 Delta das Americas; Day 8 Fortaleza or São Luís, Day 9 Departure Day.
Day 1 Arrival Day in São Luís
Arrive in the morning. São Luís is the only city in Brazil founded by the French. A walk around the Historical Centre is
the perfect way to see the beauty of this charming colonial town rich in folkloric traditions. Welcome meeting @ 18hs.
Day 2-3-4 Lençóis Maranhenses National Park
We start early in the morning. Beautiful remote beaches, mangroves, oases with crystalline waters, white sand dunes,
interesting fauna and migratory birds are some of the attractions of this 1550 square kilometer national park. We first
visit the area called “Grandes Lençóis”, meaning “Big Bed Sheets” because of the appearance of the sand dunes. A
4x4 journey takes us through isolated, traditional fishing villages in this stunning part of Brazil, an area that few people
have the privilege to visit.
Day 5-6 Rio Preguiças / Paulino Neves / Parnaiba
A boat journey up the “Rio Preguiças” takes us to a local community. There they make their living from the Buriti tree – the
most important palm tree in the area. We will have the opportunity to see all the processes involved in making handcrafts
and other products. We then navigate to Caburé with stops at Mandacaru Light House and Vassouras - part of which is
called the “Pequenos Lençóis” or “Small Bed Sheets” – an Environmental Protected Area.
Enjoy the unique simplicity of farming communities on our 4x4 route…pigs, goats, and kids bathing in the river are
some of the day-to-day scenes of this beautiful, pure area. We then take a local public bus to Parnaíba.
Day 7 Delta das Americas
Delta das Americas, also known as Delta do Parnaiba, is the only delta to open into the Atlantic Ocean.A boat trip offers the chance to visit one of the biggest
mangrove forests in the world which is 2700 square kilometers of islands, beaches, lagoons, sand dunes and mangroves!
The delta is home to amazing fauna and with a bit of luck we might see iguanas, snakes, crabs, monkeys, caiman and
the beautiful scarlet ibis, without counting other bird species. A nightbus takes you to Fortaleza, the final destination of
this tour. You will arrive in Fortaleza early
in the morning. Or if you wish, you can take a bus back to São Luís the next morning (let us know in advance). You will arrive in São Luís at the end of the afternoon.
Day 8 Fortaleza or São Luís
